The Speaker of the U.S. House, Mike Johnson, commented on Tuesday about President Joe Biden's statement following the historic Supreme Court ruling that acknowledged, for the first time in some manner, the immunity of former President Donald Trump from legal prosecution. In response to a question on Fox News about Biden's remarks, Johnson said Biden's statement was "contemptible" and "dangerous," accusing the president of attempting to undermine the Supreme Court.
On Monday, President Biden stated that the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity is a "dangerous precedent" that could turn presidents into kings, urging the American people to oppose this by rejecting Donald Trump in the November elections. In clear and considered remarks from the White House, Biden noted that the court's decision means it is highly unlikely Trump will be prosecuted for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election before the scheduled vote on November 5, warning that this could turn American presidents into kings.
Earlier on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court concluded that Trump cannot be sued for actions within his constitutional powers as president but can be sued for his personal actions, marking a historic ruling that acknowledges, in some way, the president's immunity from prosecution. Biden stated, "This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. We are all equal under the law. No one, no one is above the law. Not even the President of the United States." He indicated that the court's decision means there are now no limits to what the president can do, adding, "It is a dangerous precedent because the powers of the office will no longer be constrained by law... the only limits will be imposed by the president alone."
In contrast, Trump welcomed the ruling, stating on his social media network, Truth Social, that it is "a big win for our democracy and our Constitution." He asserted that "the historic ruling issued by the Supreme Court today should put an end to all the campaigns of persecution" that he claims Biden is leading against him.
