Egypt: Decision on Physics Exam After Tears from High School Students

The Minister of Education and Technical Education in Egypt, Reda Hegazy, held a meeting with the technical committee today, Monday, to review the questions and answer model for the General Secondary Education exams. This comes in response to the Ministry's commitment to transparency and providing students with details regarding the concerns raised about the 2024 General Secondary Education Certificate exam in Physics.

Hegazy urged the technical committee, since issuing his directives, to quickly prepare a comprehensive report on the difficulty level of the Physics exam and the alignment of the questions with the standards, considering the best interests of the students.

The committee's report concluded the following results:

- The exam aligns with technical specifications and has a gradation in difficulty (30% for simple cognitive levels, 40% for intermediate cognitive levels, and 30% for advanced cognitive levels).

- 90% of the exam questions were similar in concept to those in previous end-of-year exams (first and second rounds) from the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, as well as those found in guiding models.

- There were remarks on the phrasing of parts of question number 6 (Model A), question number 33 (Model A), question number 20 (Model A), question number 14 (Model A), and question number 40 (Model A) among the multiple-choice questions (bubble sheet), which were the subjects of students' complaints.

Based on a thorough review by the technical committee, Dr. Reda Hegazy decided to take the following actions:

- Grant full marks for question 6 (Model A), considering the question's sequence in other models.

- Grant full marks for question 33 (Model A), considering the question's sequence in other models.

- Grant full marks for question 40 (Model A), considering the question's sequence in other models.

- Consider answers (A - D) for question 20 (Model A) as correct, considering the question's sequence in other models.

- Consider answers (A - B) for question 140 (Model A) as correct, considering the question's sequence in other models.

- Hold accountable the committee responsible for reviewing the exam questions before printing.

- Announce the passing rate for the Physics exam immediately after completing electronic grading.

The Minister called on the students to focus on the upcoming exams, asserting that the ministry prioritizes students' interests, which is why a specialized technical committee comprising experts reviews the exam questions and answer models after each subject's exam before grading, to address any student complaints and facilitate matters for them.
