The Egyptian Public Prosecution ordered today, Tuesday, the referral of a driver from the "Uber" company to the competent criminal court to punish him for charges of female kidnapping through deceit, coupled with the crime of sexual assault by force and threat, in the case known in the media as "New Cairo Girl Case."
Investigations revealed that the victim had taken a ride in the driver's car via the ride-hailing application "Uber." The accused closed the application to prevent tracking, took her to a remote desert road away from public view, then stopped the car and moved to the victim's seat where he assaulted her sexually. When she resisted, he beat her and threatened her with a white weapon, prompting her to call for help from two passersby, who supported her in the investigation, while the accused fled the scene.
The driver is also accused of sexual harassment. The Public Prosecution heard testimonies from a legal representative of "Uber," who stated that the accused did not initiate the trip alert and closed the application at the location of the incident as previously mentioned. He provided satellite footage showing the route taken by the accused leading to the incident location.
He further noted that the accused's account with the company had previously been closed due to numerous complaints from users regarding sexual harassment, but he created another account using false documents, according to local media reports.
The Interior Ministry previously revealed details about what was circulated on social media concerning a driver attempting to assault a woman in Cairo, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
The ministry previously stated in a statement that a report was received by the security agencies from a girl after she got into a vehicle belonging to one of the ride-hailing applications, whose driver took her to an area within the jurisdiction of Nasr City Police Station and attempted to assault her while armed with a knife, resulting in her injury, but she managed to escape.
The perpetrator was apprehended at the time, and it was found that he resided within the precincts of the al-Muqattam Police Station. Additionally, the weapon and the car used during the incident were seized, and legal procedures were implemented.
In response, "Uber" condemned the driver's dangerous behavior, confirming that it took all necessary actions against him, including suspending his account on the application. They added that once they were informed of the incident, they reached out to a family member of the victim to provide all possible support, according to Egyptian media.
They emphasized that they are working closely with local authorities to provide all necessary information to complete the investigation, reiterating their commitment to continue efforts to combat "all forms of sexual assault and violence."
The Public Prosecution ordered the apprehension of the accused and his vehicle, requesting police investigations that confirmed the incident, leading to his arrest, along with the recovery of the vehicle where the white weapon used in the incident was found.
