We Lebanese are criticized for allowing all nations to intervene in our affairs, and that we cannot decide anything without envoys, mediators, committees, and popular gatherings. Some go further in their reproach, claiming that Lebanon is a country without sovereignty, without a state, without a government, without a president, without a judiciary, without banks, without medicines, and many other "withouts." This criticism is blind. No one seems to notice that we, too, have roles in the world’s affairs. In fact, we are involved in some of the largest matters, and if it's not us, then our sons-in-law and relatives are among the notable figures in this world.
Amidst this international gloom, there was delightful news this morning: an op-ed in "The New York Times" by star George Clooney, urging his friend and fellow Democratic Party member, Joe Biden, to immediately withdraw from the presidential race. As for the connection of our dear son-in-law to the matter, he is one of the major donors to election campaigns, which is the core of the issue. In this general capacity and with their personal friendship, he addresses Biden firmly: "Joe, you know how much I love you, but no one can fight time and age."
Immediately after reading the article, I called my friend and George's father-in-law, Ramzi Alameddine, and asked him to convey, on behalf of the "Baakline Group," our sincere greetings to the husband of his daughter Amal and our heartfelt appreciation for this correct step and its impact on the crisis in America and everywhere.
That was the national request and the group's desire; however, the personal request is that my dear friend has recently taken to mourning his friends, recalling those who have departed and listing those who remain. Please, Abu Amal, do not rush us, put us at the end of the list!
Moreover, Ramzi belongs to the Druze sect, which believes in reincarnation; thus, the whole matter is merely a transition through God's times and human locations. From here, we reiterate our thanks to dear George (and our daughter Amal) for their honorable positions on the issues of this world and its people.
And once again, please tell our dear George that the entire mountain greets him and honors his generosity, and his position regarding Mr. Biden is, God knows, our collective stance. May God guide your steps and his.
