The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced today, Monday, the appointment of British actor Theo James as a goodwill ambassador. The UNHCR stated that James, who participated in the series "The Gentlemen" and "The White Lotus," has been supporting the agency since 2016 and has traveled to Greece, France, and Jordan to meet with asylum seekers and refugees.
James mentioned that his family's experience "has made me understand the magnitude of the sacrifices made by refugees and the suffering they endure." He added in a statement: "During World War II, my grandfather had to flee from Greece to Syria on a small boat, and his bravery and resilience inspired me to help make a difference in the lives of displaced people."
He continued: "...the Syrian people welcomed my grandfather and provided him with a safe place to live, allowing him to rebuild his life and practice his profession as a doctor and give back to the Syrians. That is why it is important for me to stand in solidarity with refugees fleeing current conflicts and contribute to sharing their stories. They need our support now more than ever."
Last week, the UNHCR reported that the number of forcibly displaced people reached an unprecedented level of 117.3 million by the end of last year, a figure that may rise if there are no political changes at the global level. James stated: "No one chose to become a refugee, but we can all choose how to respond to those in need of a safe haven upon which their lives depend."
