Democrats Acknowledge Biden's Defeat to Trump

In the historic debate between the oldest presidents in U.S. history, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the latter dealt a fatal blow to Biden, prompting even close Democrats to acknowledge their leader's defeat. Democrats were in a state of immense panic regarding President Joe Biden's poor performance in the presidential debate, with some actively discussing topics previously deemed off-limits, such as the "idea of replacing him."

Three acquaintances of three potential Democratic presidential candidates reported being bombarded with text messages throughout the debate, while one advisor mentioned they received pleas for their candidate to step forward as a replacement for Biden, according to Politico. Another advisor noted that at least six major donors sent messages indicating that what transpired was a "disaster," suggesting that the Democratic Party needed to take action but conceded that "not much will be possible" unless Biden steps aside.

These concerns were shared by more than ten Democrats who spoke to Politico, with most given anonymity to speak freely. One major Democratic donor and Biden supporter stated that it was time for the president to end his campaign. This individual described Biden's night as "the worst performance in history," saying that Biden was "so bad that no one would notice Trump's lies."

The donor added in a text message, "Biden needs to withdraw... there is no doubt about it," and suggested two alternatives for Biden: Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, respectively. At least two prominent potential contenders for 2028, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and California Governor Gavin Newsom, stated they stood by Biden despite his disappointing performance.

When asked on MSNBC if Biden should step down, Newsom remarked that discussing such matters was "unhelpful" and "unnecessary," adding, "What kind of party turns its back because of one performance?" Another Biden-supporting donor commented after the debate that there was a need for Biden to step down, indicating that this might not be feasible, adding, "or he needs to die... or we will lose." A Democratic strategist emphasized that the only person who could make that decision to step down is Biden himself.
