Obama and His Wife Support Harris's Presidential Candidacy

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, announced their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency on Friday. Obama told Harris in a phone call joined by his wife, "Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to support you and to do everything we can to get you elected and into the Oval Office." Michelle noted that she is proud of Harris and expects the upcoming elections to be historic.

In a joint statement announcing their support, the Obama family commended Harris and highlighted her achievements. The statement said, "Kamala has more than a resume. She has the vision, character, and strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our minds that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and serve the American people."

The statement added, "At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives all of us a reason to hope." Obama did not immediately endorse Harris following President Joe Biden's announcement on Sunday that he would not seek re-election. Harris, for her part, thanked the Obama family for their support and expressed her gratitude for their decades-long friendship. She said, "Oh my God. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me. I look forward to doing this with you." She added, "But most importantly, I just want to tell you that the words you have spoken and the friendship you have given me over the years mean more than I can express, so thank you both. This means a lot."
