Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations at the United Nations, expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for sponsoring the Police Chiefs Summit (UNCOPS 2024). The UAE has contributed to many activities related to UN policing, including hosting several performance evaluation conferences for UN police leaders over the past two years in Abu Dhabi, which has enhanced the country's role in fostering dialogues with international organizations and improving policing capacities. Lacroix’s remarks came during the summit held at the UN headquarters in New York City on June 26 and 27, as part of its ongoing approach and active participation in bolstering global efforts to enhance the security and stability of peoples and maintain peace in various regions.
The summit is the largest gathering of ministers, police chiefs, and senior representatives from regional police organizations worldwide, taking place biennially with police leaders from member states to engage in discussions and hold bilateral talks aimed at promoting peace, security, and international development for all, while enhancing levels of cooperation in policing and security among member states.
The UAE's Ministry of Interior delivered a statement during the summit, emphasizing its commitment, under the guidance and support of the national leadership, to continuous cooperation with all countries and international organizations in the security and policing sectors in order to combat all forms of crime. The strategic partnership with UN police and efforts made in the International Initiative for Law Enforcement and Climate (I2LEC) were appreciated, with the UAE's consistently aligned policies, established by the late founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, playing a crucial role in resolving many international and regional issues. The UAE's journey of empowerment and development continues under the vision and support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
The delegation reiterated the Ministry of Interior's ongoing participation in international and regional efforts to establish international security and stability, wishing success to all participants of the summit, which aims to provide a dignified life filled with prosperity and development for all peoples.
The International Initiative for Law Enforcement and Climate (I2LEC) hosted a discussion titled "Guardians of the Earth: Global Law Enforcement Strategies for Environmental Protection" on the sidelines of the UN Police Chiefs Summit (UNCOPS 2024), attended by representatives from the global law enforcement community, aimed at raising awareness of the increasing positive impact of policing operations on environmental crimes and climate change, showcasing best practices, and sharing valuable lessons learned to benefit the global law enforcement community and enhance international cooperation in developing global law enforcement strategies for environmental protection.
