Meet Egypt's New Foreign Minister

The new leader of Egyptian diplomacy for the upcoming phase is Ambassador Badr Abdel-Aty, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cairo University (1987) and a Master’s degree in International Relations (1996) from the same university. He also earned a PhD in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University in 2003.

#### Distinguished Diplomatic Career

Ambassador Badr Abdel-Aty has an outstanding diplomatic career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, excelling in various departments and sectors within the ministry. He has made significant contributions to issues pertaining to the Middle East and African affairs.

He served as a member of the Egyptian delegation at the Cairo Economic Conference for the Middle East and North Africa in 1996, and held the position of Third Secretary at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Tel Aviv, responsible for Israeli domestic affairs and the peace process in the Middle East from 1991 to 1995. He was also an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991, and a lecturer at the Nasser Military Sciences Academy in Cairo in 2003, and has authored several articles and works in the field of international politics.

#### Palestine and African Affairs

Abdel-Aty was Director of Palestinian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2007 to 2008, and an advisor at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Washington, responsible for Congressional and African affairs between 2003 and 2007. He also served as First Secretary in the Foreign Minister's office, handling African affairs and the peace process in the Middle East from 2001 to 2003.

#### Middle East and Africa

He held the position of Second Secretary at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Tokyo, overseeing African affairs, the Middle East peace process, and Iran from 1997 to 2001, and served as Second Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Regional Economic Cooperation in the Middle East from 1995 to 1997.

#### Former Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry

Ambassador Abdel-Aty served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister and official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the tenure of former Minister Sameh Shoukry, and was Director of Public Diplomacy from 2013 to 2015. He was also Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for European Union affairs and Western Europe, as well as the national coordinator for the Union for the Mediterranean from 2012 to 2013, and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Brussels from 2008 to 2012.

He served as Egypt’s ambassador to Germany from 2015 to 2019, making notable efforts to advance Egyptian-German relations and enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors during the administration of former Chancellor Angela Merkel.

#### Developing Relations Between Cairo and the European Union

Prior to his nomination as Foreign Minister, Ambassador Badr Abdel-Aty served as Egypt's ambassador to Brussels, playing a significant role in enhancing bilateral relations between Cairo and EU countries over the past years. He also worked to strengthen economic and trade cooperation, contributing to the infusion of billions of dollars into the Egyptian state treasury from the European Union during this period.
