After the Execution and Life Sentences for His Wives: What Will Happen to al-Baghdadi's Children?

After the Execution and Life Sentences for His Wives: What Will Happen to al-Baghdadi's Children?

After the Karkh Criminal Court issued a death sentence today, Wednesday, against the wife of the slain ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, sources from "Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath" revealed the fate of the rest of the family members. A judicial source explained that three of al-Baghdadi's children, namely (Abdullah, Hassan, and Fatima), have been transferred to an orphanage as they are minors, indicating that their relatives can contact the facility to claim them since they are still below the legal age; however, no one has done so.

He added that Muhammad, al-Baghdadi's son, and Umayma, his daughter, were also transferred to the orphanage after their mother received a life sentence. The source also confirmed to "Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath" that the court issued a death sentence for Asma, al-Baghdadi's first wife, and life imprisonment for the third wife, Noor Ibrahim al-Zoubai (as the second wife was Syrian and died with him on the day of his killing), and also life imprisonment for his daughter Umayma.

This decision came after the Supreme Judicial Council announced that the Karkh Criminal Court issued a death sentence against the first wife of former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Asma Muhammad, for her conviction of collaborating with the organization and for detaining Yazidi women in her home.

The media center of the council stated in a statement today that the "terrorist," as referred to, had detained Yazidi women in her home after they were kidnapped by ISIS gangs in the Sinjar district in western Nineveh province. The sentence was issued in accordance with Article 4/1 and by reference to Articles 2/1 and 3 of the Anti-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005, and in light of the provisions of Article 7/First of the Yazidi Survivors Law No. 8 of 2021.

It is worth noting that on February 16, 2024, the Iraqi National Intelligence Service announced the arrest of the wife of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and their daughter from one of the neighboring countries after identifying their identities and hiding places.

Earlier, Iraqi MP Vian Dakhil confirmed that al-Baghdadi's wife, named Asma Muhammad, was involved, like her husband, in the abduction of Yazidi women. In a press conference at that time, she stated that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's wife committed heinous acts related to human trafficking and sexual assault on Yazidi girls. She also noted that al-Baghdadi's wife was responsible for recruiting and delivering young girls to her husband for sexual abuse before selling them to the organization's leaders and fighters.

Many voices have called on the federal government to impose the harshest possible penalties under the law on Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's wife for her involvement in the organization’s crimes, especially after the accused denied, in a private interview with the "Al-Arabiya" network, committing abuses which Yazidi girls have contradicted.

Meanwhile, the fate of al-Baghdadi's children remains uncertain as they continue to reside in a government orphanage, and no relatives have come forward to claim them, given that no judicial decisions have been made regarding them due to their young age.

It is noteworthy that the United States announced in October 2019 the death of al-Baghdadi in a night raid conducted in northwestern Syria just kilometers from the border with Turkey. Al-Baghdadi's eldest son, Huthaifa, was killed at the age of 17 in one of the battles in 2017, according to his mother, while his youngest son, al-Yaman, detonated himself with him during the raid that killed him.
