This elderly Moroccan man did not know that he would spend 20 years of his life chained as he entered his old age. Moroccan security forces in the province of Zagora, southeastern Morocco, managed to free an elderly man who had been detained by his family for 20 years, and he was transferred to a mental health facility at Sidi Hassan bin Nasir Hospital for necessary treatment, according to the newspaper "Hespress."
The victim, in his seventies, was held in an area known as Douar Taghzout, in the commune of Amrzakan in the province of Zagora, and he was found shackled in iron chains. Initial investigations revealed that this elderly man was detained on the pretext of having a psychological disorder and being a threat to those around him, but there was no medical record to confirm his psychological disturbance, making the detention illegal, in addition to violating his basic freedom and exposing him to harsh living conditions.
The incident sparked outrage in the province of Zagora, while the public prosecutor is still investigating the case to take appropriate legal action. During the investigations, the victim's family stated that he suffered from psychological disorders and posed a danger to family members and citizens; however, they denied that he was detained, admitting instead that they had tied him up and locked him in the house to prevent any harm he might cause.
