An industrial-environmental meeting was held today, Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Institute of Industrial Research, attended by the Minister of Industry in the caretaker government, Deputy George Boujikian, the Minister of Environment in the caretaker government, Nasser Yassine, the Director General of the Institute of Industrial Research, Bassam Al-Fern, the Director General of the Lebanese Standards and Metrology Institution, Lana Daghm, the environment minister's advisor Dr. Hassan Dehini, and a team of staff from the institute and the Ministry of Environment.
The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two ministries and the Institute of Industrial Research, developing the memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Environment and the institute, and the two ministers emphasized the need to benefit from the advanced and substantial capabilities of the institute through its specialized centers and fourteen integrated laboratories that cover various productive sectors. These include laboratories for civil engineering, electricity, microbiological analyses, chemical and physico-chemical analyses, water, leather and textiles, mechanics, grains, flour and bread, petroleum derivatives, paints, packaging, solar energy, and the calibration office, which has been internationally recognized since 2004, as well as the accreditation the institute has obtained for inspection and sampling operations.
The discussion also addressed decisions No. 1/99 and No. 1/2024 dated 1/7/2024 regarding the establishment of environmental mechanisms for the cement industry and a licensing mechanism for the rehabilitation of cement, lime, and gypsum quarries, and the institute's essential role in the implementation mechanism, based on its scientific and national references. It was also agreed to form a joint technical committee for follow-up.
