The World Health Organization announced today, Saturday, that thousands of cholera cases were recorded during June, with at least 160 deaths attributed to the disease. According to the organization's statement, cases and fatalities were reported in 18 countries, and it was noted that the number of cases in June was 14 percent lower compared to May. The Eastern Mediterranean region reported 32,467 new cases, approximately 18,700 cases in Afghanistan, over 6,600 in Yemen, and more than 5,200 in Pakistan. Overall, the total number of recorded cases from January 1 to June 30, 2024, across 25 countries was 249,793. It is worth mentioning that the World Health Organization classified the cholera epidemic as a "Level 3 Emergency" in January 2023, which corresponds to the highest level of complexity. The organization's statement noted, "Given the number of outbreaks worldwide, their geographical distribution, and the shortage of vaccines and other resources, the World Health Organization continues to assess (based on June findings) the global risk as very high."
