Algeria... An Elderly Woman Sparks Controversy for Dancing on TikTok

An elderly woman from rural Algeria has sparked controversy on the social media platform TikTok after creating a page where she shares her daily routine, stirring debate by documenting every detail of her life, including dancing and singing. The influencer, hailing from Tizi Ouzou, has named her page "Zahra Tcherouft" and mixes Arabic and Amazigh in her narratives to describe her daily life in her village.

Zahra shares her daily experiences in her village, showcasing its stunning natural landscapes, documenting her walks and bike rides, and sharing traditional and modern dishes she prepares in her kitchen. She also posts local songs on her page, singing and dancing to them with joy. Many are impressed by Zahra Tcherouft's content, appreciating her spontaneity in speech and movements, with one commenter saying, "You bring us joy through your videos. I move from one video to another without boredom." Another added, "I think you should share your recipe for keeping your spirit so lively."

Furthermore, they believe that her page, aside from its entertainment value, helps promote the region and its traditions, thereby contributing to the revival of Algerian tourism, especially in rural areas. However, her dancing and singing have drawn criticism from many who believe it is inappropriate for her, arguing that she ought to present herself more modestly. One wrote, "Instead of limiting yourself to tourist content that showcases the region and its customs, the dancing you share with your followers makes you similar to influencers who only have dancing and singing as content." Another said, "It is not appropriate for you to turn your page into a dance page. Leave this to youthful content creators who lack the ability to attract followers with purposeful content."
