The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, has directed all ministries and relevant authorities to raise the maximum state of readiness and mobilize all resources to assist the municipality of Kufra in southeastern Libya. Dbeibeh emphasized the necessity of providing urgent help to citizens affected by the heavy rains that have caused significant flooding and damage to property and infrastructure in the city. These directives come in response to the crisis and aim to ensure immediate support for those impacted.
Kufra has experienced unprecedented heavy rainfall, leading to torrents that have flooded large parts of the city, resulting in substantial material losses for residents. Abdullah Suleiman, spokesperson for the Kufra municipality, stated in a statement to RT that the Martyr Atia Al-Kashef Hospital, the city's main medical facility, suffered severe damage after large amounts of rainwater entered the ground floor. Suleiman added that the hospital was completely out of service due to this damage, requiring urgent intervention from ambulance teams to evacuate patients.
He mentioned that ten patients were evacuated from the hospital and distributed to several clinics and health centers in the city for necessary care. The spokesperson for the Kufra municipality confirmed that the heavy rain and strong winds not only led to the hospital's closure but also caused significant material damage to homes, cars, and infrastructure.
Local residents have called on responsible authorities to provide immediate assistance and work on repairing the damage, especially given the shortage of medical resources after the hospital's closure. Citizens have shared videos on social media showing the extent of the disaster, illustrating the massive amounts of water that have flooded streets and homes, turning the city into a landscape of mud and water. These videos reflect the difficult situation faced by Kufra residents amidst these harsh weather conditions.
