The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated today, Friday, that "Samsung is recalling over one million electric ovens in the United States, following reports of accidental fires that injured 40 people and killed pets." According to the commission's statement, owners of one of the thirty affected models are advised to contact Samsung for free replacement locks or handle covers. The recall includes more than 1.1 million electric ovens sold between 2013 and 2024.
Samsung stated that the announcement was made due to reports indicating that the knobs could be accidentally activated by people or pets bumping into them. The company did not mention the fires or pet fatalities in its press release. According to the commission, Samsung ovens have been involved in "approximately 250 fires," resulting in around 40 injuries, eight of which required medical attention.
The commission stated, "There are also reports of seven fires that resulted in the deaths of pets and 18 cases of significant property damage." It warned individuals who continue using the defective models to keep children and pets away from the front controls and check them before going to sleep. The South Korean manufacturer of electronics and home appliances said, "Consumers can continue using their electric ovens while awaiting the free lock or handle cover kit."
