Lebanon at the Olympics: The Medal Dream "Fades" for Basil and Sagaybov "Surprises" with Performance Not Reflecting His Abilities

Lebanon at the Olympics: The Medal Dream

The practical outcomes contradicted the hopes of Olympic shooter Ray Basil, the champion of the Arabs and Lebanon, in securing a medal at the Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024). The dream that had lingered for her and all Lebanese faded despite the intensive preparations she undertook in several camps and international competitions, the latest being at the World Championship. She was unable to succeed in the second day of the trap shooting competition, finishing with 23 hits in the first round and 20 hits in the second round, totaling 114 hits out of 125, placing 20th out of 30 shooters. After the match, Dr. Pierre Jalakh, head of the Lebanese Olympic Committee and the Lebanese Shooting Federation, who accompanied her over two days with the technical staff, stated, "Ray Basil remains a champion of high standards and the best in Lebanon. The lack of success in the Olympic Games may be due to the psychological pressure exerted by competing with professional champions. A few months ago, Basil had a remarkable appearance at the World Shooting Championship, which confirms her talent, and she exerted all her efforts. These games are now behind us, and starting tomorrow we need to prepare for the next four years according to a scientific and supportive program from the state."

On another note, judo player Kramnop Sagaybov surprised in his first and only match in the preliminary round, as he did not perform at his usual level and was unable to compete with world champion Ivalyo Ivanov from Bulgaria, losing by half a point in the last ten seconds of the match according to the WAZA-ARI system. He was a strong contender at the World Judo Championships held in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. Sagaybov was accompanied by François Saade, head of the Lebanese delegation and member of the Olympic Committee, along with the president of the Lebanese Judo Federation, Abdo Ayub, and coach François Junior Saade.
