An American woman recently rescued revealed "terrifying" details about being tied to a tree by her ex-husband in a forest in India, where she remained for days without food. Lalita Kay Kumar, 50, was found chained to a tree in a forest south of Mumbai, India. Lalita stated that her ex-husband "tied her there, and she went without food for 40 days."
She was discovered after asking for a divorce from her Indian husband, who then divorced her, tied her, and left her alone in a remote forest for 40 days without food, surviving on rainwater that would enter her mouth.
A passerby heard moaning while walking near the trees and discovered the woman. Lalita informed the rescuers in writing, due to her poor health and significant weight loss, that her ex-husband had tied her to a tree in the forest and said he would leave her to die there.
Images shared by rescuers in Sawantwadi showed Lalita upon her discovery, extremely emaciated and covered in dirt. Rescuers found Lalita after a shepherd in the forest heard her cries for help and reported to the police.
The police opened an investigation into attempted murder against Lalita's ex-husband, and a search is ongoing to apprehend him to understand the reasons behind his actions. According to the police, the woman is American and was born in the United States; she has been living in India for 10 years, and her residence visa has expired.
Lalita suffers from severe delirium and psychological disorders, is being fed intravenously, and received injections to treat jaw stiffness. She did not mention why her ex-husband attempted to kill her.
