The newspaper "Al-Arabi Al-Jadid" reported, based on information it obtained, that the election of Yahya Sinwar as head of Hamas’s political bureau was made by consensus and based on agreement within the leadership and the Shura Council of Hamas abroad, which convened after the condolences for the death of Ismail Haniyeh in Doha. The newspaper noted that this election supports Sinwar in light of the "significant Israeli incitement against him for being the architect of the Al-Aqsa flood and the breach of the borders between the Gaza Strip and Israel."
Musa Abu Marzouk, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, stated to the newspaper that Sinwar was chosen for several reasons: first, he was the commander of the attack on October 7, and the operation was carried out in accordance with the organizational regulations within Hamas, selected "in proportion to his abilities and in the face of Israeli aggression."
In another statement, Hamas indicated that it decided to choose Sinwar as the head of the political bureau after extensive and deep consultations and discussions within the leadership institutions of the movement. They affirmed their "confidence in Brother Abu Ibrahim as their leader during a sensitive phase, within a complex local, regional, and international context."
Israeli army spokesman Major Daniel Hagari referred to the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as head of Hamas’s political bureau following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. In an interview with the Saudi television network "Al-Arabiya," he said, "Yahya Sinwar is a terrorist responsible for the most dangerous terrorist act in history - October 7." He added, "There is only one place for Sinwar, and that is next to Muhammad Deif and all the terrorists responsible for October 7. This is the only place we prepare and allocate for him."
For his part, Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz commented on Hamas's decision, stating, "The main killer Yahya Sinwar as the leader of Hamas instead of Ismail Haniyeh is another reason to seek to eliminate him quickly and erase this organization from the face of the earth."
