Leticia Aoun: Bronze Medal Dream Slips Away in Final Minutes

The Lebanese taekwondo star and Olympic champion Leticia Aoun delivered impressive performances but lost the chance to secure a bronze medal in the taekwondo competitions at the Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024) in the under 57 kg weight category after being defeated by Canadian athlete Skylar Park (0 - 2) in the concluding match of the Lebanese delegation's participation in this Olympic event.

In her quest for a medal, Aoun had previously won in the round of 16 against Chinese Taipei's Liu Hsiao-Ling (2 - 0) and then repeated her success in the quarter-finals against North Macedonia's Miljana Reljic by the same score (2 - 0), before stumbling and losing in the semi-finals to Iranian Nahid Kianishandi (0 - 2), leading her to compete in the play-off for the bronze medal against Park.

Accompanying Aoun during her matches were the President of the Lebanese Olympic Committee, Dr. Pierre Jalakh, the head of the delegation and member of the Olympic Committee, lawyer François Saadeh, and the President of the Lebanese Taekwondo Federation, Dr. Habib Zreifa, along with the coaching staff and team members, who supported her throughout a long day with enthusiastic cheering while waving Lebanese flags and singing national anthems.

In a statement after the match, Olympic Committee President Dr. Pierre Jalakh said, "Athlete Leticia Aoun excelled against her competitors from world champions, showcasing high proficiency and playing with extraordinary competitive abilities. She recorded two victories against two losses and performed magnificently, but experience prevailed once again. There is still a path of brilliance and challenge ahead for her in future competitions."
