Six Sunni parliamentary forces announced today, Tuesday, that they will present a new candidate to assume the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, replacing the dismissed Mohammed Halabousi, confirming that they hold the parliamentary majority.
In a joint statement sent to Shafaq News agency, the parties and blocs, including Taqaddum, National Communities, National Resolve, Al-Sadrah, the Iraqi National Project, and the Initiative, reported reaching an agreement regarding the nomination of a candidate for the Speaker of the House.
The parties and blocs stated in their announcement, "After a series of discussions, dialogues, and meetings with national political spectrums; the political forces representing the aforementioned Sunni component (with 55 deputies) have agreed to nominate a new candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives and present it to the national political blocs for support and gain national acceptance to resolve this entitlement, and to take the necessary actions to open the nomination process."
They pointed out that "the election of the Speaker of the Legislature, nominated by the clear absolute Sunni majority, comes to complete the remaining period of the fifth legislative session, perform constitutional duties, and fulfill the political agreement document along with its legislative laws and initiatives serving the people and achieving the government's program in its legislative aspects."
Yesterday, Monday, a source in the coordination framework revealed to Shafaq News that the framework leaders confirmed in a meeting that day their adherence to the law and the Federal Court's decision and that they would not resort to amending the internal regulations of the House of Representatives.
Furthermore, the source added that the framework leaders expressed their opposition to the idea of reopening the nomination for the parliamentary Speaker position again, opting to remain with the existing candidates, with one to be selected for the role.
The participants agreed to hold a special session of the House of Representatives after the Arbaeen visit to elect a new Speaker.
However, a prominent leader in the coordination framework, Amer Al-Fayez, stated to Shafaq News that the Sunni political forces have not reached an agreement despite several chances being given to them by the coordination framework and Kurdish political forces.
He added that matters are still subject to discussions among the Sunni political forces, which is why the issue has been postponed until after the Arbaeen visit, hopeful of reaching an agreement among the Sunni political forces, otherwise, the coordination framework will agree with the Kurdish forces on a position to resolve the file.
