The son of the late Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, Alaa Mubarak, launched a sharp criticism directed at Musa Abu Marzouk, the deputy head of Hamas abroad, on Thursday, following statements by the latter that criticized Egypt's mediation efforts regarding the situation in Gaza. Alaa Mubarak wrote on his X account (formerly Twitter): "Egypt has never failed to support the Palestinian cause; throughout history, the cause has remained a focus of the Egyptian leadership, which stands with the necessity of establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state and that the Palestinians obtain their legitimate rights. Egypt plays an important role against the attempts of those who want to liquidate the cause."
The son of the late Egyptian president continued, stating: "Egypt does not accept the absurd and cheap speculations of Abu Marzouk and should not come out at this time to blame others for his failure after igniting the region with a war whose consequences he did not consider. It is strange that he came out to direct accusations at Egypt, while Egypt cannot consider itself a neutral mediator, as the Palestinian people face ongoing massacres!"
Mubarak added: "Who caused these massacres? Egypt is the one that signed the Camp David Accords! You are the ones who refused to sit and negotiate; had you done so, the situation would have been much better. So do not blame anyone but yourselves. And as long as you’re not happy with Egypt’s role and keep directing accusations and doubting its role, then have some decency; we are silent out of respect for the difficult and harsh circumstances and the ongoing crimes of the occupying forces. We are silent because of the massacres and the fall of thousands of martyrs, including children and civilians, in cold blood without any fault of their own. We have said this is not the right time for any discussions other than solidarity with all resistance factions; discussions about the actions you’ve committed against Egypt and your involvement in crimes against our fallen soldiers in Sinai during Ramadan, while you shamelessly and with audacity direct accusations at Egypt."
Abu Marzouk had said in statements to Al-Arabi TV: "Egypt must work to stop the fire; it has specific responsibilities in Gaza and cannot consider itself a mediator while being neutral and not standing alongside the oppressed or the Palestinian people." The Hamas leader added: "Egypt is the one that lost Gaza, Egypt is the one that signed the Camp David Accords, Egypt is the one that turned the Philadelphi axis into a point of contention between the Palestinians and Egyptians, and now it has allowed the Israelis to be present in this axis... Egypt has special responsibilities that it must fulfill to stop the massacres, and I believe Egypt is capable of stopping these massacres in a single day," according to his statement.
