The Baghdad Municipality denied what some social media outlets circulated regarding the transfer of Al-Zawraa Park and converting its current location into residential complexes. The municipality stated in a statement that "this information is unfounded, as Al-Zawraa Park is one of the most important recreational places in the capital, Baghdad, and the municipality will not approve any activity that contradicts this, as it is the largest recreational space frequented by Iraqi families from inside and outside Baghdad."
It was mentioned that "there is a comprehensive plan prepared by the Baghdad Municipality to develop the closed section of Al-Zawraa Park and establish new recreational activities that will be added to the existing activities of the park." The statement pointed out that "there is ongoing monitoring and direction from the Baghdad Municipality Secretary to increase green spaces in the capital and transform all neglected squares and spaces into lush gardens and public recreational areas."
Al-Zawraa Park is a public park located in the Karkh side of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Its site was previously a military camp before it was transferred to investment to become Al-Zawraa Park. To the east of Al-Zawraa is the Al-Salihiyah neighborhood, to the west is the Al-Harithiyah neighborhood, to the south is the Al-Qadisiyyah complex, southeast is Karada Mariam, and to the north is the Baghdad International Station. The park covers an area of 3 square kilometers and was established in the early 1970s on an original area estimated at 750 dunams, of which 300 dunams were cut off in the 1980s to create a celebration square.
In recent years, there have been rumors about transferring Al-Zawraa Park and its gardens to investment for conversion into a residential complex, despite the Baghdad Municipality's repeated denials.
