Lebanon Electricity: Last Production Unit Forced Offline from the Grid

The Lebanese Electricity Corporation announced in a statement that, following announcements made on 07/08/2024 and 27/07/2024, and until the situation regarding the efforts of the relevant authorities to address the provision of fuel oil for the Electricité du Liban is clarified—whether through the Iraqi swap agreement or other sources—and after exhausting all possible precautionary measures to extend energy production to the minimum possible extent under the current circumstances, the Electricité du Liban reports that the last remaining production unit of the Zahrani plant was forced offline today, 17/08/2024. This was due to the complete depletion of the plant's fuel oil reserves, resulting in a total cessation of electricity supply across all of Lebanon, including essential facilities (airport, port, water pumps, sewage, prisons, etc.). The Corporation will make efforts to restart the units that were forcibly taken offline once fuel oil is secured, thereby gradually restoring electricity supply to its previous state. Accordingly, the Electricité du Liban will keep all citizens informed of any developments regarding electricity supply through subsequent announcements.
