After years of evasion, Egyptian authorities announced the death of a defendant sentenced to life imprisonment for events that took place in January 2011. The Ministry of Interior stated in a statement today, Tuesday, that investigations by security agencies revealed the actions of a "high-risk criminal element who escaped from Wadi Natrun prison during the events of January 2011 while serving a life sentence for murder." The individual was previously accused in 24 cases, including possession of firearms, drugs, murder, theft, weapon manufacturing, and kidnapping, actively engaging in criminal activities related to the trade of firearms and narcotic substances. He used a house located within the jurisdiction of the Badari police station in Asyut to store firearms and drugs.
According to the statement, "as a result of this information, he was monitored, but upon sensing the forces, he opened fire at them, leading to his death." The authorities reported that he was found in possession of a grenade launcher, 13 automatic rifles, 17 shotguns, a pistol, 30 locally-made guns, 21 firearm magazines, a large number of ammunition of various calibers, three hand grenades, and 50 kilograms of bang heroin. Legal procedures have been initiated.
It is noteworthy that the Muslim Brotherhood had executed a plan to storm prisons, taking advantage of the outbreak of events in January 2011 and the subsequent violence, destruction, and arson of police stations and state security premises. The group launched an attack on the prisons, facilitating the escape of several of its members, including Egyptians and foreigners, as well as some dangerous inmates affiliated with extremist groups.
