Syrian Initiative to Control Arms: What Does Shibani Bring?

Syrian diplomatic sources have revealed to Syria TV that Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Shibani is set to make an official visit to Beirut on Thursday. This move is part of a political effort aiming to open a new chapter in Syrian-Lebanese relations, alongside proposing a Syrian initiative to support Lebanon’s internal stability amid the current political phase the country is experiencing.

The sources indicated that Shibani will present during his meetings a Syrian political initiative aimed at assisting the Lebanese state in confining weapons to governmental control through a consensual political process. This approach seeks to avoid any domestic confrontations or security divisions in Lebanon, based on Damascus' belief that addressing this issue should occur through dialogue and national understanding, rather than imposing realities that could lead to internal unrest.

The sources further stated that Shibani’s meeting with Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri will hold special significance, focusing on ways to alleviate domestic tension and exploring the possibility of Syria, in coordination with Arab and regional partners, helping to contain any tensions that may accompany the forthcoming phase. This support aims to prevent Lebanon from spiraling into internal clashes amidst ongoing regional transformations.
