Pope Leo XIV has called on the United States to embrace "moderation" in public discourse and show "respect for differing opinions" in a speech delivered on the eve of the nation's 250th Independence Day.
Urging Americans to find "common ground" and foster "unity," the Pontiff, a native of Chicago, highlighted the role of "successive waves of immigrants" in "shaping the country's future." His message was broadcast live from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, where he stated, "I hope this tradition continues to yield positive outcomes in a public discussion characterized by moderation, respect for differing opinions, and a constant readiness to find common ground that strengthens the cause of peace and reconciliation."
During his address, the Pope was presented with the "Liberty Medal" from the National Constitution Center this year. The medal annually honors individuals or organizations working in the field of defending freedom, human rights, democracy, and human dignity.
