An explosion involving fireworks in Mexico has claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left 64 injured after a wall collapsed due to the blast.
The incident occurred in the town of Temascalcingo in the State of Mexico, near the 'Nuestra Señora de La Luz' church. The town, with a population of 66,000, is located approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, according to a statement from Mexican authorities on Sunday.
Hundreds had gathered to witness the fireworks display, part of a religious festival in the area, when the explosion happened.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and the State of Mexico's Attorney General's office has launched an inquiry into the incident.
Fireworks explosions are not uncommon in Mexico, as they are frequently used in street celebrations and religious festivals. Almost four years ago, a powerful fireworks explosion in the village of Huichapan in the central State of Hidalgo injured 17 people.
