A recent NBC News poll reveals a significant decline in support for U.S. President Donald Trump among Republican voters, less than two months before the crucial midterm elections slated for November.
The poll, conducted online with 7,105 adults from August 20 to September 1, shows a drop of about 10 percentage points in the number of Republicans who said they "strongly approve" of the president's performance.
Previous surveys in March and April indicated that 52% of Republicans strongly supported Trump, but that figure has now fallen to 41%. Meanwhile, the percentage of those who "somewhat approve" has risen from 31% to 39%.
Trump's overall job approval rating stands at 36%, the lowest recorded by NBC News polls during his current term.
Additionally, 64% of Americans express disapproval of his performance, nearing the lowest approval mark of 33% in a Reuters poll conducted last month.
This decline partially reflects growing dissatisfaction with Trump's handling of the war in Iran, with 69% of Americans viewing his performance as either "poor" or "very poor." Although this figure has changed little since spring, strong support among Republicans has significantly decreased; those strongly approving of his handling of the war have dropped by 18 percentage points since spring, now at 30%. Even among "MAGA" supporters, strong approval of his war management has fallen by 21 percentage points, down to 43%.
This survey appears as Americans brace for the year's final quarter amid rising economic concerns and increasing uncertainty regarding the Iran conflict's trajectory.
Despite these numbers, Trump remains optimistic about his party's performance in the midterms, challenging historical precedent that the party controlling the White House usually loses seats in Congress.
In a late August television appearance, Trump said, "For some reason, voters tend to swing the other way. I think we're going to perform very well."
Trump and his Vice President, JD Vance, are set to address the upcoming midterm Republican conference in Dallas next week, in an effort to rally voters ahead of election day.
The margin of error in the "NBC News Poll" is +/- 3.3 percentage points.
