On Sunday, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir conducted a tour of the Shykif Fortress area in southern Lebanon, currently occupied by Israel.
The tour included viewing a "major network of tunnels belonging to Hezbollah built beneath the hills," according to the Israeli military.
Zamir stated, "The Shykif Fortress area is under our control, filled with terrorist infrastructure. Supported and funded by Iran, Hezbollah has been constructing underground tunnels in the area to threaten northern communities. Our forces now control key areas above ground and the paths beneath them."
He added, "The Lebanese army must fulfill its commitments to the historic agreement signed and work to clear the region of Hezbollah elements. Meanwhile, the Israeli military will continue to act decisively to remove threats from Lebanese territory and is ready to launch a swift attack if the ceasefire is violated."
Zamir considered the agreement "a result of the efforts of fighters and operations led by the northern command with all its units working in the area."
A framework agreement was signed last June 26 in Washington between Lebanon and Israel, stipulating that the Lebanese army would extend its authority in the south, provided that Hezbollah is disarmed, starting with "experimental areas" from which the Israeli army withdraws.
Nevertheless, Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue almost daily, albeit at a somewhat reduced rate recently, and Israel maintains thousands of troops in southern Lebanon, much of whose population has been displaced.
