Macron Makes Historic Visit to Damascus: A New Era in French-Syrian Relations

In a landmark move, French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday, marking the first visit by a major Western leader since Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa took power in late 2024, following the toppling of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Upon his arrival, Macron was received by Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Al-Shibani. The visit, which extends through Tuesday, is expected to focus on fostering political stability, enhancing bilateral relations, and discussing Syria's role in easing regional tensions.

The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron will advocate for the establishment of a “free and pluralistic Syria that respects all its components,” emphasizing the importance of Syria’s contribution to securing peace and stability in the Middle East.

Details of the visit were withheld until the presidential aircraft touched down in Damascus, driven by security concerns, particularly after last week’s bombing of a café in the Syrian capital which resulted in several casualties.

This visit marks the first by a French President to Syria since former president Nicolas Sarkozy in 2009, and Macron is the first leader from an EU state to visit Damascus following the country's political shift.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) described the visit as “historic,” noting that it represents a crucial step in Syria’s return to the international stage and sets the foundation for a new phase of Syrian-French relations based on mutual respect and partnership.
