The Zaporizhia region witnessed a fresh escalation in conflict between Russia and Ukraine on Saturday, as both sides engaged in attacks on areas under each other's control, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries amid mutual accusations of targeting civilians.
Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-appointed governor of the Russian-controlled section of Zaporizhia, reported that the overnight Ukrainian attack on the coastal town of Kyrylivka raised the death toll to 11, including 4 children, with eight people still missing.
He added that 16 individuals were injured, including five children, as rescue operations to sift through the debris continue.
According to Russian authorities, Ukrainian forces launched approximately 25 drones toward Kyrylivka, with eight striking camps and recreation centers resulting in casualties. Balitsky accused Kyiv of deliberately targeting civilians.
One Dead, 11 Injured in Russian Attack
Conversely, Ukrainian authorities reported a Russian attack on the Kyiv-controlled area of Zaporizhia, resulting in the death of a woman and at least 11 injuries, including three children aged 3, 5, and 7 years.
City governor Ivan Fedorov stated that the shelling caused significant damage to several buildings, sharing images depicting the extent of destruction.
Ukraine's Ukrinform agency reported explosions heard in the city of Zaporizhia, coinciding with air raid sirens sounding in Ukrainian-held areas within the region.
Zaporizhia has been a significant front line in the Russia-Ukraine war since 2022, with Russia controlling large portions of the region while Ukraine retains others. Both Moscow and Kyiv deny targeting civilians in the conflict.
