Spain, France, and Portugal are intensively battling extensive wildfires as a severe heat wave engulfs southern Europe. Authorities have cautioned that expected rises in temperature in the coming days could reignite flames and spark new outbreaks.
In Spain, the government anticipates progress in containing the fires near Madrid by Tuesday evening. Officials have identified the fires between the Sierra Oeste area and the Castilla y León region as one of the most severe in the country’s recent history. These wildfires, along with others, have decimated approximately 75,000 hectares and prompted at least 60,000 evacuations.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated during his visit to the firefighting operations coordination center that the nation is encountering “complex hours.” He warned that an impending heat wave will exacerbate efforts to manage the flames and underlined Spain's forefront position in confronting what he termed a “climate emergency.”
In France, authorities reported containing a massive blaze near Bordeaux, although it remains unextinguished. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez emphasized maintaining extreme caution, with temperatures predicted to hit 40 degrees Celsius amid the new heat wave.
Over 2,750 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,440 internal security forces are engaged in combating the fires in France, supported by 18 planes and helicopters. The number of injured firefighters has risen to 88, while the fires have destroyed 240 homes, without fatalities reported among residents.
In Portugal, multiple fires erupted in the north and center of the country, prompting the deployment of more than 1,000 firefighters with support from around 20 aircraft and helicopters. The most active hotspots are reported in Santarém, Guarda, Braga, and Bragança regions.
These developments occur as meteorological services predict the continuation of the heat wave, with temperatures expected to surge to approximately 40 degrees Celsius across wide areas of the Iberian Peninsula. This heightens concerns of further wildfire spread in the coming days, forcing emergency services into a state of heightened alert.
