Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has confirmed that authorities are continuing investigations to uncover the details surrounding the drone attack targeting two ships at Damietta Port, emphasizing the need for international unity to contain the region's escalating tensions.
El-Sisi made these remarks during a phone call with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who condemned the attack on Damietta Port. Sánchez expressed Spain’s solidarity with Egypt, highlighting discussions on regional developments and efforts to restore stability in the area.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi underscored the importance of joint efforts between Egypt, Spain, Europe, and the international community to halt the escalation. Sánchez emphasized the need for peaceful resolutions to conflicts and the strengthening of the United Nations’ role in supporting Middle Eastern security and stability.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly explained that security forces are analyzing the remnants of the drone that hit one of the vessels, noting that no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Madbouly added that immediate measures were taken to contain the incident, clarifying that the gas storage ship was unharmed, while the regasification ship was affected. Firefighting efforts took approximately 12 hours, after which the two ships were separated and the damaged vessel was moved about three kilometers away as a precaution.
He confirmed that emergency protocols and alternative measures prevented impacts on gas and fuel supplies, with normal maritime traffic resuming at Damietta Port. Ships continue to arrive and depart routinely, with operational services inside the port remaining stable.
In related developments, the Egyptian Cabinet announced that preliminary investigations indicated the fire aboard the ships resulted from a drone attack. The investigation continues to uncover the incident's details and to ensure national security and Egyptian interests are protected, given that no entity has yet claimed responsibility.
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum had declared on Wednesday that the fire on the storage and regasification ships at Damietta Port was contained, confirming the absence of casualties or human losses.
