The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, has held the United States and Israel accountable for undermining international law, criticizing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for not identifying those responsible for this situation.
Baghaei's remarks came in a post on the platform 'X', responding to a speech by Guterres where he warned of the expanding scope of impunity, the decline in adherence to international law, and the preference for military solutions over political settlements, claiming these developments exacerbate civilian suffering, especially in the Middle East.
Baghaei agreed with Guterres' portrayal of the situation but questioned why he did not name the 'main culprits', adding that the United States and Israel, as he put it, bear primary responsibility for undermining international law. He also criticized the failure to condemn those granting impunity to war criminals and perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
The Iranian official further stated that it is time for the United Nations to assume its responsibilities, urging the international organization to take clearer stands to uphold the international law system, warning that the UN might share the same fate as the League of Nations if this approach continues, according to him.
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, had previously mentioned concerns over the alarming decline in respect for international law worldwide and the widening circle of impunity, arguing that favoring military options over negotiated solutions intensifies crises and hinders peace prospects.
