The British newspaper The Telegraph has revealed that the United States and Israel are discussing the possibility of imposing a land blockade on Iran. This consideration is part of exploring new options to increase economic pressure on Tehran amidst recent regional developments.
According to the report, this option was discussed during a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Oval Office. The two sides considered both "kinetic and non-kinetic" means to intensify pressure on Iran following months of military strikes and economic campaigns.
The report explained that a potential land blockade might involve pressuring countries neighboring Iran to tighten control over or close their border crossings. This would limit the flow of exports and imports, further isolating Iran’s economy.
An Israeli official cited in the newspaper noted that one scenario under discussion involves preventing goods from entering or leaving Iran, which could increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Conversely, retired U.S. General Sean MacFarland considered that implementing a comprehensive land blockade would be "nearly impossible" due to Iran's extensive land borders with seven countries. However, he suggested that curbing its trade ability could have a significant economic impact if achievable.
The report noted that Iran shares borders with Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, making the success of any land blockade contingent on the cooperation of these countries. Such cooperation could face political, economic, and security challenges.
Citing an informed source, the newspaper added that Trump believes his current strategy on Iran has reached a stage where additional options are necessary to encourage Tehran to return to the negotiating table.
The report also suggested that proposing a land blockade might be part of a strategy to divert attention from other options under consideration as Washington and Tel Aviv continue to evaluate several scenarios. These scenarios include reaching an agreement, maintaining the maritime blockade, or resuming military strikes.
