Iran has announced reaching an agreement with the Sultanate of Oman regarding the geographical features of the navigation route in the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions between the two parties have reportedly entered the final review stage and the drafting of a joint statement.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ismail Baghaei, stated that Tehran and Muscat have agreed on the geographical coordinates of the proposed route. He noted that, barring any obstacles from third parties, the joint statement is in its final stages before announcement.
Baghaei explained that negotiations between Iran and Oman took place over two months, focusing on establishing a safe navigation route for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This involved evaluating the technical, legal, security, and environmental aspects by the responsible authorities in both countries.
The Iranian official emphasized that this agreement does not inherently mean that the Strait of Hormuz is now safe. The security of navigation is tied to other field and political factors.
Baghaei described the talks with Oman as 'professional and forward-looking', noting that Qatar and Pakistan continue their efforts to help reduce tensions. Tehran is in communication and exchanging views with both countries, although there are currently no plans for official visits to either nation.
