This Saturday morning, Southern Lebanon witnessed a significant escalation from Israel, involving airstrikes, artillery shelling, demolitions, and shooting. A populated home was struck by an airstrike in the town of Ansar, resulting in casualties, coinciding with attacks on Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the Ali Taher highlands, and the destruction of homes in Bint Jbeil.
In a recent development, the Israeli Air Force conducted a pre-dawn airstrike on Ansar in the Nabatieh district, targeting a residential structure which was completely destroyed, leading to several fatalities.
Preliminary information reports 7 fatalities and 2 injuries, with rescue and civil defense teams continuing search and recovery operations, suggesting the final toll might change.
The Lebanese Civil Defense initially reported six deaths from the airstrike.
The strike targeted a house in the Mraiseh – Wadi Khalil area of Ansar, near Zarariyah, prompting immediate response from ambulances and civil defense.
Simultaneously, Israeli fighter jets attacked the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, hitting a home behind the old Hasan Kamel Al-Sabah high school.
These assaults were accompanied by intense low-altitude flights across the south, sonic booms, and the deployment of flares.
Before midnight Friday-Saturday, Israeli jets also struck the neighborhood of Al-Mashaa in the town of Al-Mansouri.
At dawn, the hills and forests of Ali Taher suffered artillery shelling with phosphorus shells, paralleled by aerial machine gun strafing.
The artillery barrage extended to the Dabsha hill near Ali Taher's forest and the Jabal Rafii hills in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region, while Israeli aircraft continued heavy patrols overhead.
In Bint Jbeil, Israeli forces demolished several homes at dawn, persisting in the razing and bulldozing operations seen in the town and other border areas.
Additionally, Israeli forces opened heavy machine gun fire on homes along the Konin – Saf Hawaa road, contributing to the escalation concurrent with airstrikes and shelling on multiple fronts across the south.
This escalation occurs amidst ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts characterized by U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa and the head of the U.S. Lebanon coordination group, General Joseph Cleerfield, following the recent end of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Rome.
The U.S. initiative bears significant importance amid the tense atmosphere surrounding the last negotiation round and continued Israeli escalation in the south, alongside Israeli stances against withdrawing from still-occupied Lebanese territories.
Washington aims to maintain the implementation path of the framework agreement and set the stage for the next negotiation round, expected in early September, amid ongoing disputes over Israeli withdrawal and Hezbollah's armament issue.
Cleerfield's action is seen as a reaffirmation of continued U.S. mediation in the negotiation process and implementation of the framework agreement, a time when pressure on the Lebanese state to control arms persists.
