Basil Urges President Aoun to Block Controversial Amnesty Law

Leader of the "Free Patriotic Movement," MP Gebran Bassil, urged President Joseph Aoun on Thursday to "reject the general amnesty law instead of merely challenging it," emphasizing, "the difference is clear, and we will essentially challenge it as it is rife with constitutional and legal abominations."

In a post on his "X" platform, Bassil criticized, "Parliament has committed a crime against the army and the people, releasing murderers, drug dealers, and terrorists, alongside the innocent."

Bassil argued that "the law was manipulated, just like the nation, by the regime."

In a previous press conference, Bassil called on the government to "conduct a public interrogation before the Lebanese public about several files, notably concerning war, weapons, and the agreement related to this file."

He noted that the government "has not enacted any of the promised reforms," pointing out that "what has been implemented was, in some cases, contrary to reform requirements and laws," revealing that "the opposition possesses a detailed file with 57 points addressing what the government failed to achieve or violated, asserting the file is "ready to publish anytime."

Over three decades after the last amnesty law, the Lebanese Parliament passed the new amnesty law, concluding a long chapter of political and judicial tensions over one of the nation’s most sensitive issues.
