Somali police reported that a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device, killing six officers outside a police station in the capital, Mogadishu, late on Sunday. The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. Major Sadik Aden Ali Dudishi stated at a press conference, "It is confirmed that six police officers were killed, including the police chief of the Waberi district, and six others were injured in the explosion." Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack but stated that they killed five individuals. Abdiaziz Abu Musab, the group's military operations spokesman, told Reuters on Monday, "Our target was to kill police leaders, and we killed five individuals including the police chief of the Waberi district." The militant group has been fighting since 2008 to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government and frequently conducts shootings and bomb attacks in Mogadishu and other areas of Somalia.
