Eyebrows and eyelashes are among the most important traits that distinguish humans and even animals, and their significance goes beyond aesthetic appearance. Dr. Stephanie Marioni, a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, revealed that the main purpose of both is to protect the eyes. She stated, "Their goal is to form an additional protective layer for the eyeball against anything, whether it is liquid, solid, dust, or insects," according to the website "Live Science."
She added that eyebrows protect the eyes from external materials, such as sweat, dandruff, and rain, that might fall on the face. They can either capture or absorb the material, or redirect it to the side of the face away from the eyes. Eyebrows are also essential for facial expression and the communication of subtle emotions.
Eyelashes provide similar protection for the eyes. Marioni said, "They are almost like facial hairs. Long and sensitive. When something touches them, it triggers a blinking response as a defense mechanism." She emphasized that without eyelashes, it would take longer to activate the blinking response, as the primary trigger would be seeing something coming towards the eye. She further noted, "But this gives you a little warning that something nearby could actually harm the eye."
Stephanie Marioni advised that if you notice your eyebrows or eyelashes falling out or changing in any way, consult a doctor immediately.
