Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos broke down in tears during a press conference to say goodbye to the club, after a 16-year career filled with titles, due to a lack of agreement on signing a new contract for the famous defender. Ramos had previously stated that he could play for Real Madrid for free, but club president Florentino Pérez was unable to meet Ramos's salary request, especially amid the financial crisis the club is experiencing.
Real Madrid's Twitter account shared a video summarizing the player's career with the club. On Wednesday, the Spanish football club announced that their international defender and captain Sergio Ramos would be leaving the team. At 35 years old, Ramos, whose contract with Real ends on June 30, has been an icon of the royal club since joining in 2005, leading them to four UEFA Champions League titles and five domestic league titles.
Real Madrid stated in a statement, "Sergio Ramos will leave Real Madrid, and tomorrow (Thursday) he will be farewelled in a press conference" with the presence of club president Florentino Pérez. Ramos is notably absent from the Euro 2020 finals, which began on June 11, following his surprising exclusion from the final roster. Coach Luis Enrique mentioned that the decision to exclude the Real Madrid captain, who has suffered from injuries this season, was "difficult but he has not been able to compete under the right conditions since January."
Ramos, who is 35 years old, missed games for Real Madrid due to several injuries and played only five matches with the team in 2021, although he has recently become better physically. He suffered from injuries to his right thigh, left calf, COVID-19, and finally an injury to the hamstring of his left thigh.
