German Chancellor Angela Merkel opposed closing borders with European neighbors like France again if the Corona crisis worsens. During an online meeting with the Franco-German parliamentary assembly today, Merkel stated, "These measures during the first wave of Corona were extremely difficult. Perhaps this situation was unavoidable at that time, but I agree that something like this should not happen again," clarifying that this also requires very close coordination.
Merkel added, "I think we have learned our lesson from that." She participated in a hearing today with French Prime Minister Jean Castex in the Franco-German parliamentary assembly.
The Franco-German parliamentary assembly was established in 2019 and consists of 50 members from both the German Bundestag and the French National Assembly. Typically, the assembly's representatives meet alternately in Berlin and Paris, but meetings have recently been held online due to the Corona pandemic. Today's meeting will be the last for the assembly before the legislative elections in Germany next September.
