The police in Karbala province denied on Sunday the news circulated by newspapers and social media about an alleged "assassination attempt" in the Al-Faris neighborhood of the province. Activists reported that a candidate in the elections, named Ammar Al-Rubaie, had "survived" an "assassination attempt in the Al-Faris neighborhood in the city center from a gunshot to the chest."
The directorate stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "a false and incorrect news spread on social media stating there was an assassination attempt in the Al-Faris annex."
They clarified that what occurred was "a scuffle between two individuals, resulting in minor injuries due to the use of firearm. They are cousins who had disputes over financial matters, not an assassination attempt."
It is noteworthy that Ihab Al-Wazni, an activist in the popular movement in Karbala, was assassinated last month in Tahrir Square in central Karbala. Approximately 600 people have died in violence related to protests since the outbreak of the protest movement in Iraq in October 2019, and other Iraqis have been shot in what appeared to be assassination operations.
