Despite his case concluding with his return to Brazil last Sunday after spending a week in custody in Cairo at the request of the public prosecutor for harassment of an Egyptian woman on May 24 in a market in Luxor, Dr. Victor Sorrentino, 39, filmed a "selfie" video two days ago explaining the details of what happened in the market. During the video, he became so emotionally overwhelmed that he broke down in tears.
The lengthy video, lasting 47 minutes, narrates exactly what transpired in the market, which he entered with two friends on a leisure trip in Egypt, accompanied by a tour guide. In the video reviewed by "Al Arabiya News," he stated that what transpired was not harassment toward the seller named Reem; rather, nuances in his interaction and the environment in the market made it appear so. He videographed their conversation and the atmosphere, later cutting part of what he recorded into a video that he shared on his Instagram page on May 30, asserting that had he shown the entire footage, the dialogue with the seller would have appeared "in a different context."
The doctor showcased the video he recorded in the market within his recent production. It featured six other people sharing a light-hearted atmosphere, spurred by the tour guide playfully wielding two copies of statues, which amused everyone. Additionally, a segment displayed a mural depicting 14 judges in provocative poses, hanging on a wall in the market. One of the individuals explained the mural to him, prompting the doctor to ask the seller two ambiguous questions in poorly spoken Portuguese. While she somewhat understood his questions, she did not grasp their risqué connotation.
Given the length of the self-filmed video and his emotional breakdown three times throughout, Brazilian media excerpts included a scene of his crying, aired as part of their coverage of his account of the market incident. Among these was a clip from the local SBT television channel, which did not elaborate much on his tears.
In the emotional moment captured, the doctor apologized to everyone he had wronged during the market incident, acknowledging he made a mistake and taking sole responsibility for what happened. Comment sections on Instagram regarding the lengthy video indicated that the doctor did not appear to have compensated the seller monetarily; rather, it seemed to be her initiative to forgive him and accept his apology, wishing to resolve the predicament he had placed himself in so he could return to his home, wife, and only son.
