Iraqi Minister of Electricity Majid Hantoush submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on Tuesday, as the hours of electricity supply for citizens continue to diminish amid a significant rise in temperatures. Hantoush's resignation comes amidst a complete decline in the provision of electric power in Iraq, with temperatures reaching around 60 degrees Celsius in direct sunlight and 50 degrees in the shade in many areas. There has also been an organized campaign by unidentified individuals to blow up electricity supply towers.
Iraqi Electricity Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Moussa stated in a comment to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the minister has indeed submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister, although he declined to provide further details. Two days ago, the Sadrist Movement initiated a campaign to dismiss the Minister of Electricity.
In this context, a government source mentioned to INA that the Cabinet will discuss the resignation during its session on Tuesday. According to specialists in the sector, Iraq produces 19,000 megawatts of electrical energy while needing more than 30,000 megawatts. The suffering of Iraqis intensifies, especially in the summer when temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius, due to the inadequate supply of electricity to homes.
