Sisi is the First Egyptian President in Iraq in 30 Years

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi arrived in Baghdad, Iraq, on Sunday to participate in the events of the trilateral summit between Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. Sisi will be joining Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and King Abdullah II of Jordan as part of the fourth round of the trilateral cooperation framework that began in Cairo in March 2019, where he was received at Baghdad International Airport by Iraqi President Barham Salih. The spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency stated that Sisi's historical visit to Baghdad, the first by an Egyptian president to Iraq in 30 years, reflects the strength of the historical relations between Egypt and Iraq, both government and people, and affirms Egypt's commitment to support and develop these relations towards broader horizons in the framework of shared destiny and challenges, and to meet the common interests of the two fraternal countries.

Sisi’s participation in the Baghdad trilateral cooperation summit aims to build on the achievements of the previous three summits, evaluate the development in various fields of cooperation, and follow up on ongoing projects. This is in the context of strengthening and deepening the distinguished historical relations between the three countries, as well as enhancing political consultations among them on ways to address the challenges facing the Arab world and the Middle East.

The spokesperson also mentioned that the visit is expected to include a meeting between the Egyptian president and the Iraqi prime minister to discuss the fraternal relations between the two countries, which have witnessed significant growth in recent years, as well as ways to enhance economic and trade relations between the two brotherly countries, and to consult on regional issues and files. Additionally, the Egyptian president will hold a meeting with the Jordanian monarch to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations on all levels, within the framework of the close and brotherly ties that bind Egypt and Jordan, and the commitment of both countries to strengthen cooperation and continue intensive consultations on matters of mutual interest.
