Cristiano Ronaldo has set the record as the all-time leading scorer in national team history, following Portugal's 2-1 victory over Ireland on Wednesday night in the European qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup. Ireland remained ahead with a goal until the 89th minute when Ronaldo scored an equalizing goal with a precise header, before sealing Portugal's victory with another header in the sixth minute of stoppage time. With this double, Ronaldo claimed the record with a total of 111 goals, surpassing the previous record held in partnership with former Iranian striker Ali Daei, who has 109 goals. Ireland becomes the 45th national team to fall to the Madeira Rocket. Ronaldo had an early chance to break the record with a penalty in the 15th minute, but Ireland's goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu successfully saved it.
