The US Navy's Pacific Fleet announced on Tuesday that a military helicopter took off from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln before later crashing into the sea, prompting search and rescue operations off the coast of San Diego. The fleet tweeted, "An MH-60S helicopter launched from Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) crashed into the sea while conducting routine flight operations approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego at 4:30 PM Pacific Time on August 31." It added, "Search and rescue operations are ongoing using several Coast Guard and Navy assets." The Third Fleet of the US Navy reported that one crew member has been rescued. NBC 7 San Diego mentioned that five individuals are still missing.
