The Central Bank of Iraq announced today, Tuesday, the discovery of several bags of cash during debris removal in the city of Mosul. The Central Bank of Iraq published a statement on its Facebook page stating, "Following the Central Bank of Iraq's initiation of the rebuilding of its branch building in Mosul, the first phase, which involved removing the damaged part of the building and debris clearance, has been completed."

The statement added, "During the work of the first phase, we coordinated with the Nineveh Operations Command to assign a specialized force to examine the building, including the bank safes buried under the debris, to ensure they are free of any security threats." A team was formed headed by the director of national security in the province, alongside several other security agencies and the general manager of the Central Bank branch in Mosul.

On Tuesday morning, October 19, 2021, committee members arrived at the site of the Central Bank building, opened the bank safes, and found several bags of cash soaked in groundwater that had leaked into the building due to an airstrike during the province's cleansing operations. The committee is in the process of extracting the treasury contents to deposit them at the Central Bank until inventory procedures are completed.

In April of last year, Iraqi forces discovered substantial sums of money buried in a house after liberating Mosul from the terrorist organization's control. In 2014, Iraqi authorities stated that the "ISIS" organization (designated as a terrorist group in Russia and many other countries) seized millions of dollars and gold jewelry that were deposited in public banks before the city fell under the group's control.
